U.S. Navy to Fund Vical's H1N1 Pandemic Influenza (Swine Flu) Vaccine


SAN DIEGO, Oct. 1, 2009 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Vical Incorporated (Nasdaq:VICL) announced today that the U.S. Navy has awarded a contract for $1.25 million to support large-scale cGMP vaccine manufacturing and related clinical and regulatory preparations, which are already underway, for a Phase 1 clinical trial of the company's vaccine against A/H1N1 pandemic influenza (swine flu). The trial will be conducted in collaboration with the U.S. Naval Medical Research Center (NMRC), a biomedical research organization within the Navy.

"The current threat from H1N1 influenza and the potential for other future pandemics from strains like H5N1 call for a proactive approach to developing new vaccine technologies, such as DNA vaccines, that can be deployed rapidly," said Vijay B. Samant, Vical's President and Chief Executive Officer. "We are pleased with the Navy's vision in funding this important vaccine development program, which can benefit from their experience and capability to advance this program to the next stage."

As previously announced, Vical was the first company to produce a vaccine against the A/H1N1 influenza virus after the initial reports of widespread outbreaks in Mexico, and the first to announce robust immunogenicity results from animal testing in two species. Within days of the outbreaks, the company entered into a Cooperative Research and Development Agreement (CRADA) with NMRC to conduct clinical testing of an H1 DNA vaccine formulated with Vical's patented Vaxfectin(R) adjuvant.

Vical Licensee Sanofi-aventis Completes Enrollment in Phase 3 Angiogenesis Trial


SAN DIEGO, Sept. 28, 2009 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Vical Incorporated (Nasdaq:VICL) announced today that the company's licensee, sanofi-aventis, has confirmed the completion of enrollment in a multinational 500-patient pivotal Phase 3 clinical trial of its angiogenesis therapy based on Vical's non-viral DNA delivery technology. Sanofi-aventis expects final data from this trial in late 2010.

八ッ場ダム大反論②

鳩山政権が本日スタート。
八ッ場ダムを所管する国交大臣に誰がなるか大変気をもんだが、大方の予想通り、前原誠司氏に決まった。
国交大臣は思い切って「脱ダム」の新党ニッポン代表田中康夫氏を！などと期待したが、やっぱりダメかぁ・・・　前原大臣には、ひるむことなく、ぶれることなく、八ッ場中止へとしっかりカジを切ってもらいたい。
そして、最初にやってもらいたいのは、苦難の道を歩いてきた長野原町の住民の方々へ、まずは「政府としての謝罪」をしっかりとやり、あわせて「生活再建支援」をきっぱりと表明することだ。

前回のブログの続き。異論、反論、大反論！！！

①事業の本当の進捗率は？　アット驚く数字です。
　
　石原都知事がオリンピック招致がうまく行かない腹いせのように八ッ場に八つ当たり？　
「事業がすでに７０％終っているのに今更やめられない」という
知事の発言はやっぱり的外れ。
　７０％というのは、すでに全体の事業費の７０％を使ってしまったということなのに、
　わざとなのか、工事の進捗率と混同している。
　
　では、工事は実際どのくらい進んでいるのか？
　
　付け替え国道６％、付け替え県道２％、付け替え鉄道７５％、代替地造成１０％、
　ダム本体０％

　これらを平均すると、合計９３％÷５工事＝１８．６％

　乱暴な計算かもしれないが、今のところ一応の目安となる数字がこの　１８．６％。
　そして、お金はすでに７０％も使っているのだから、単純計算だと、
　残り８１．４％の工事を、残り３０％のお金でやらなければならないのだ。
　これは絶対むりである。
　このまま続ければ、事業費は間違いなく膨れ上がる。
　税金がもっと投入されることになる。
　
②「八ッ場ダムを中止する方が、続けるより高くつく」も真っ赤なウソ！

　既に使ったお金３２１０億円＋生活関連の残事業費７７０億円＝３９８０億円

　左が「継続した場合」
　既に使ったお金３２１０億円＋残事業費１３９０億円＋
　『地すべり対策、東京電力への減電補償、追加予算など』１０００億円＝５６００億円

そしてたった今、鳩山内閣が発足して初めての会見が行われた。鳩山さんに続いて副総理の菅直人さんが、なんと、なんと、八ッ場ダムに言及したーーー！！！
その言葉は大体次のとおり。
「八ッ場ダムに関しては、地元の皆さまの言葉に耳を傾けるべきだ。しかし、色々今言われているが、これまで霞ヶ関と国交省が根回しをして陳情をさせてきた。そういうことがまた続くようなことは内閣としてやるべきではない。鳩山内閣は今までとてもできないと思われてきたことをマネジメントとしてしっかりやる」

菅さんの肝の据わった言葉を聴いて、思わずジーンとなった。よかった。民主党はぶれていない。菅さんの言葉は平たく言うと、「無駄なものはきっぱりやめる。しかし、地元の再建はきっちりやる」

今後も、自民党やあきらめの悪い官僚の抵抗が続くだろうが、地元再建とダム中止はセットでしっかりとやってほしい。

SAN DIEGO, Sept. 10, 2009 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Vical Incorporated (Nasdaq:VICL) announced today that the company's DNA vaccine against A/H1N1 pandemic influenza (swine flu) has demonstrated robust immune responses in 100% of vaccinated animals against virus strains isolated from recent outbreaks in three distinct geographic locations -- California, Texas and Mexico.

Vical's plasmid DNA vaccine contains the H1 hemagglutinin gene sequence provided by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) for the swine-origin A/California/04/09 pandemic influenza virus, and after two doses produced immune responses well above the accepted protection threshold in 100% of vaccinated mice and rabbits using HI assays against the swine-origin A/California/07/09 x-179a, A/Texas/15/09 and A/Mexico/4108/09 influenza viruses. Hemagglutination inhibition (HI) titers were well above the protection threshold of 40, ranging from 320 to 2,560 in mice, and from 640 to 2,560 in rabbits against the California strain. Results against the Texas and Mexico strains were essentially equivalent, ranging from 640 to 2,560 in both mice and rabbits. Vical's vaccine would also be expected to provide similar robust immune responses against other swine-origin A/H1N1 influenza virus subtypes, supporting selection of a single A/H1N1 virus strain as the basis for the vaccine.
